De royale drivhuse i Laken er et fremragende eksempel på art nouveau. De blev bygget af Alphonse Balat på opdrag af Leopold II. Start- og slutpunkterne for spærene støtter på jorden, så drivhuset giver indtryk af en glaskuppel, der understøttes af luftbuer. På grund af de enorme dimensioner var det muligt at plante kongolesiske palmer her. De varme bygninger var ment som et symbol på kongens koloniale magt i Belgisk Kongo. Planter fra denne region skulle illustrere den magt.
