Le Serre Reali di Laeken sono un magnifico esempio di arte nouveau. Furono costruite da Alphonse Balat su commissione di Leopoldo II. Il punto di partenza e di arrivo delle travi poggia a terra, in modo che la serra offra l'immagine di una cupola di vetro sostenuta da archi di sostegno. Grazie alle enormi dimensioni, era possibile piantare qui palme congolesi. Le serre erano destinate a simboleggiare il potere coloniale del re nel Congo belga. Le piante di quella regione avrebbero dovuto illustrare quel potere.
