Las Serres Reales de Laeken son un magnífico ejemplo de art nouveau. Fueron construidas por Alphonse Balat por encargo de Leopoldo II. El punto de inicio y fin de las cerchas apoyan en el suelo, de manera que la serre ofrece la imagen de una cúpula de vidrio sostenida por arcos de aire. Debido a las enormes dimensiones, fue posible plantar palmeras congoleñas aquí. Las invernaderos estaban destinados a simbolizar el poder colonial del rey en el Congo belga. Las plantas de esa región ilustrarían ese poder.
