Steengelaag er et område på 31 ha og består af lergrave, ung elmeskov, en ældre poppelplantage med en del dødt træ, en stor dam og en blomsterholdig eng. Lergravene fra den tidligere teglværk Familie De Hemptinne gav fra 1885 til 1975 arbejde til en del af Stekense befolkningen. Lertilførsel skete dengang stadig med spade, i hvad der nu kaldes den ældste lergrave. I 1913 blev denne opgave automatiseret med indførelsen af lerudskifteren (i det lokale dialekt kaldet excavateur eller schamateur).
