Das Steingelände ist ein Gebiet von 31 ha Größe und besteht aus Tongruben, jungem Erlenwald, einer älteren Pappelniedermoorpflanzung mit viel Totholz, einem großen Teich und einer blütenreichen Wiese. Die Tongruben der ehemaligen Ziegelbrennerei der Familie De Hemptinne boten von 1885 bis 1975 einem Teil der Stekener Bevölkerung Arbeit. Der Tonabbau erfolgte damals noch mit der Schaufel, in dem, was jetzt als die älteste Tongrube bezeichnet wird. Im Jahr 1913 wurde diese Aufgabe durch die Inbetriebnahme des Tonbaggers automatisiert (im lokalen Dialekt excavation oder schamateur genannt).
