Il Steengelaag è un'area di 31 ettari che consiste in cave d'argilla, giovani boschi di ontano, una piantagione più vecchia di pioppi con molto legname morto, un grande stagno e un prato fiorito. Le cave d'argilla della precedente fabbrica di mattoni della famiglia De Hemptinne hanno fornito lavoro a parte della popolazione di Stekene dal 1885 al 1975. L'estrazione dell'argilla avveniva ancora con la pala, in quella che oggi è chiamata la più antica cava d'argilla. Nel 1913 questo compito è stato automatizzato con l'entrata in servizio dell'escavatore (nella dialettica locale chiamato excavateur o schamateur).
