Allerede i det 13^e århundrede var der her i regionen flere færger. Appelsfærgen blev allerede nævnt i et dokument fra 1253, da greven af Flandern, Gwijde van Dampierre, herre af Dendermonde, og hans kone Machteld, dame af Dendermonde, solgte rettighederne til færgen til Gregorius van Appels.

I 1798 blev alle færger statseje, og det blev tilladt at opkræve færgeafgift. Dette system forblev uændret indtil 1976, hvor pligten til at betale færgeafgift blev ophævet.
