Ya en el siglo XIII había aquí en la región varios transbordadores. Appelsveer ya se mencionaba en un documento de 1253 cuando el conde de Flandes, Gwijde de Dampierre, señor de Dendermonde y su esposa Machteld, mujer de Dendermonde, vendieron los derechos del transbordador a Gregorius van Appels.
En 1798, todos los transbordadores pasaron a ser propiedad del estado y se podía cobrar peaje. Este sistema se mantuvo sin cambios hasta que en 1976 se eliminó la obligación de pagar el peaje. El servicio de transbordador se ha mantenido y el horario diario de este permite un desplazamiento muy ágil entre ambas orillas. El pontón de madera con la pasarela de hierro fue protegido como monumento en 2004.
