På gårdspladsen ved rådhuset minder en henrettelsespæl om de grusomheder, der fandt sted her under 1. verdenskrig. Mindst fire soldater stod her foran skydemakken. Fængselscellerne stammer fra 1913. Under Første Verdenskrig tilbringer mange belgiske, britiske og franske soldater en eller flere nætter her. De er dømt for beruselse eller for at undlade at møde op i deres soldaterkvarter. Også dem, der bliver taget i at besøge barer på forbudte tidspunkter, risikerer fængselsstraf. Nogle efterlader et spor i form af graffiti: tegninger af rundbarmede damer, et navn eller en dato, ufine bemærkninger, en henvisning til regimentet, … For en række soldater er dette dødcellen. Her tilbringer de deres sidste timer, ventende på henrettelsen. Henrettelsen finder sted på gårdspladsen ved rådhuset ved morgenens gryden. Mindst fire militære er blevet henrettet på denne gårdsplads.
