Ifølge mange turistbilleder og guider begynder Ardennerne allerede fra blandt andet Namur, mens eksperter taler om Condroz. Der er med andre ord en vis forvirring mellem de turistiske Ardennerne og de geologiske Ardennerne. Ifølge geologer ligger Ardennerne på en undergrund, der stammer fra Under-Devon og ældre (Silur, Ordovicium og Kambrium). Condroz, Fagne-Famenne og kalkzonen hører derfor ikke under dette. En nem regel at huske forskellen på er: Ardennerne indeholder ikke kalksten, mens Condroz, Fagne-Famenne og kalkzonen gør.
