Det crucifix i blå sten blev beskadiget af de franske tropper i slutningen af det attende århundrede. Under den franske revolution var alle kristne symboler tabu. Fra 1795 tilhørte Østbelgien, ligesom resten af Belgien, den franske republik. Weweler var en del af afdelingen Ourthe, som havde Liège som sin hovedstad. Efter tyve år med fransk styre blev Østbelgien annekteret til det preussiske imperium på Wienerkongressen i 1815.
