Slotet blev bygget fra 1891 i Maaslandse neorenaissancestil. Det var oprindeligt en drøm for rentenieren Edgar Maris, som i 1889 havde købt domænet Bokrijk fra familien Coghen. Jacobus Van Mansfeld blev ansat som arkitekt. Maris kom dog i økonomiske vanskeligheder og forsøgte at supplere sine midler ved at fælde mange træer på sit domæne og starte en lille træbearbejdningsfabrik. Station Bokrijk var også vigtig for dette: der kunne sendes træ. Også jernmalm, i form af jernrør, blev udvundet på domænet.
