Das Schloss wurde ab 1891 im maasländischen Neorenaissancestil erbaut. Es war ursprünglich der Traum des Rentiers Edgar Maris, der 1889 das Gelände Bokrijk von der Familie Coghen erworben hatte. Jacobus Van Mansfeld wurde als Architekt engagiert. Maris geriet jedoch in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten und versuchte, seine Mittel zu ergänzen, indem er viele Bäume auf seinem Grundstück fällte und eine Holzfabrik errichtete. Auch der Bahnhof Bokrijk war dafür von Bedeutung: Hier konnte Holz verladen werden. Auch Eisenerz in Form von Eisenerz wurde auf dem Gelände abgebaut.
