Den mellem husrækkerne byggede salgs- og kirke blev designet i 1956 af arkitekt Joseph Willems på opdrag af kirke fabrikken. Den skulle erstatte den midlertidige kirke bygning fra 1932 på Tirinusgade og være en fuldgyldig sognkirke for det nye boligområde, der havde været under udvikling siden mellemkrigstiden. På dette centrale sted i den særlige plan for byggeri af området havde opførelsen af kirken altid været forudset.
