Her stod engang en af de adgangsporte, der var en del af den 2. voldanlæg. Under østrigsk, napoleonsk og hollandsk styre blev disse mure revet ned, fordi de ikke længere havde nogen defensiv nytte og stod i vejen for yderligere byudvidelse. På strækningen af volden anlagde den hollandske konge Willem I brede boulevarder, så borgerne kunne nyde en grøn, rolig gåtur rundt om byens centrum. På tidspunktet for verdensudstillingen Expo58 kom der ændringer, og boulevarderne måtte give plads til Europas første bymotorvej, noget som hele verden dengang beundrede.
