Hier stond ooit één van de toegangspoorten die deel uitmaakten van de 2de omwalling. Onder Oostenrijks, Napoleontisch en Hollands bewind werden deze muren gesloopt omdat ze geen verdedigingsnut meer hadden en in de weg stonden voor verdere stadsuitbreiding. Op het tracé van de omwalling legde de Hollandse koning Willem I brede boulevards aan zodat de burgerij kon genieten van een groene rustige wandeling rondom het stadscentrum. Ten tijde van de wereldtentoonstelling Expo58 kwam daar verandering in en moesten de boulevards plaatsmaken voor de 1ste stadsautobaan van Europa, iets waar de ganse wereld toen vol bewondering naar opkeek.
