Ved grænsen mellem Lo-Reninge, Houthulst og Diksmuide blev der i det 16. århundrede anlagt en fæstning af spanierne, "Fort de Knocke". Denne fæstning skulle beskytte IJzervlakte mod angreb fra reformatorer fra Oostende.
I det 17. og 18. århundrede blev fæstningen tilpasset og udvidet af franskmændene og østrigerne som følge af de fransk-spanske-østrigske krige. Den blev således arbejdet på af bl.a. Vauban, kendt for sine 'fæstninger' på opdrag af solkongen Louis XIV. Under kejser Joseph II blev fæstningen revet ned (fra 1781).
Knockebrug ligger ved den nordlige kant af denne tidligere fæstning. Det er en hængebro over IJzer, på niveau med Ieperleekanaal (der forbinder IJzer med Ieper).
