An der Grenze zwischen Lo-Reninge, Houthulst und Diksmuide wurde im 16. Jahrhundert ein Fort von den Spaniern angelegt, das "Fort de Knocke". Diese Festung sollte die IJzervlakte vor Angriffen von Reformierten aus Oostende schützen.
Im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert wurde das Fort von den Franzosen und Österreichern aufgrund der französisch-spanisch-österreichischen Kriege angepasst und erweitert. So wurde es unter anderem von Vauban, bekannt für seine 'Befestigungen' im Auftrag des Sonnenkönigs Ludwig XIV., in Angriff genommen. Unter Kaiser Joseph II. wurde das Fort abgerissen (ab 1781).
Die Knockebrug liegt am Nordrand dieses ehemaligen Forts. Es ist eine Drehbrücke über die IJzer, in Höhe des Ieperleekanaals (der die IJzer mit Ieper verbindet).
