On the border between Lo-Reninge, Houthulst and Diksmuide, a fort was built by the Spaniards in the 16th century, "Fort de Knocke". This fortress was intended to protect the Yser plain against attacks by reformists from Ostend.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the fort was modified and expanded by the French and the Austrians, following the Franco-Spanish-Austrian wars. For example, it was taken care of by, among others, Vauban, known for its 'fortifications' commissioned by the Sun King Louis XIV. Under Emperor Joseph II the fort was demolished (from 1781).
The Knocke bridge is located on the northern edge of this former fort. It is a drawbridge over the Yser, near the Ieperlee canal (which connects the Yser with Ypres).
