Halvvejs gennem morgenen den 9. maj 1944 dukkede 42 A-20 Havocs bombefly op i den stålblå himmel over Aarschot. Nogle dage tidligere var et første ikke-succesfuldt forsøg blevet gjort for at ødelægge stationen. Tre angrebsv bølger såede død og ødelæggelse i byen på fire minutter. Togpassagerer var flygtet ud fra stationen, i retning mod byen, og havnede midt i det heftige bombeangreb. I Stationsgaden og begijnhof lå 25 døde på gaden.
