Denne café har eksisteret siden cirka 1870 og hed dengang 'De Goude Leeuw'. Det nuværende navn 'De Vlaamse Leeuw' kom til i 1910. (Kilde J. De Brouwer). Den første udlejer af caféet var en vis Christiaan Van Ginderdeuren. På det tidspunkt var caféet en rasteplads (for heste) og kro. Christiaans barnebarn, Philemon Van Ginderdeuren, udvidede virksomheden, og i 1919 overtog Louis Couck og hans kone caféet. I 1933 blev virksomheden overladt til Odile Couck og Jerome Van Daele. I 1956 blev caféet solgt til bryggeriet Atlas.
