Dit café bestaat al sinds circa 1870 en had toen de naam ‘De Goude Leeuw’. De huidige naam ‘De Vlaamse Leeuw’ is er gekomen in 1910. (Bron J. De Brouwer). De eerste uitbater van het café was een zekere Christiaan Van Ginderdeuren. In die tijd was het café een afspanning (voor paarden) en herberg. De kleinzoon van Christiaan, Philemon Van Ginderdeuren, bouwde de zaak verder uit en in 1919 namen Louis Couck en zijn vrouw het café over. In 1933 werd de zaak overgelaten aan Odile Couck en Jerome Van Daele. In 1956 werd het café verkocht aan brouwerij Atlas.
