Este café existe desde aproximadamente 1870 y en ese entonces se llamaba 'De Goude Leeuw'. El nombre actual 'De Vlaamse Leeuw' se adoptó en 1910. (Fuente J. De Brouwer). El primer explotador del café fue un tal Christiaan Van Ginderdeuren. En esa época, el café era una parada (para caballos) y una posada. El nieto de Christiaan, Philemon Van Ginderdeuren, amplió el negocio y en 1919 Louis Couck y su esposa tomaron el café. En 1933, el negocio fue cedido a Odile Couck y Jerome Van Daele. En 1956, el café fue vendido a la cervecería Atlas.
