Stedet ligger ved den nordlige bred af Lago Maggiore og tilhører de mest turistede steder i Ticino. Ascona ligger i deltaet af floden Maggia, ved foden af Monte Verità. På toppen af dette bjerg står et kurhotel med en interessant kunstsamling.
Ascona er kendt for sin frodige vegetation. Der findes mange agaver, kamelier, mimotræer, appelsintræer og palmer i og omkring byen. Tæt på stedet ligger øgruppen Isole di Brissago i søen. Ascona har en lille strand, Lido di Ascona.
