Haldenstein har et areal på 18,6 km2 pr. 2006. Af dette areal anvendes 25,6% til landbrugsmæssige formål, mens 53,9% er skovklædt. Af resten af jorden er 2,1% bebygget, og resten er ikke-produktivt.
Før 2017 var kommunen beliggende i Fünf Dörfer kystområde i Landquart-distriktet, efter 2017 blev den en del af Plessur Regionen. Den ligger nord for Chur og ved den venstre bred af Rhinen. Den består af landsbyen Haldenstein ) og landsbyerne Batänja ) og Berg ). Kommunens grænser er Rhinen og derefter op ad Calanda-bjerget fra floden til grænsen til kantonen St. Gallen.
