Lax nævnes første gang i 1295 som Lacx. Lax er næste gang dokumenteret som et samfund kaldet Zend Goms Lax i 1308. Den første deling af vandingssystemet var i 1347; det nuværende system forsyner syv gårde omkring den lille by. De første lokale regler stammer fra 1436.
Lax har et areal, pr. 2011, på 5 kvadratkilometer. Af dette areal er 37,1% brugt til landbrugsformål, mens 38,9% er skovklædt. Af resten af jorden er 6,4% bebygget og 17,6% er uproduktivt land.
