Toponymet Rosa stammer fra valdostanske rouésa, eller rouja, som betyder "gletsjer", og det er den samme etymologi som den for Mont Rosa.
Det fremstår som en altid isdækket højlandsplateau, afgrænset mod nord af Cervino Minore, mod øst af den vestlige Breithorn og mod vest af Tête Grise og Coll de Sant Teòdul på grænsen mellem Italien og Schweiz.
