Den lille by Elsterberg ligger i Vogtland ved den hvide Elster. Den 25. juli 1952 blev byen i forbindelse med områdereformen i DDR flyttet fra Sachsen til Thüringen og i distriktet Gera. Ved folkeafstemning blev det den 1. april 1992 besluttet at genforene med Sachsen i Vogtlandkreis.
Elsterberg ligger i et dalområde, der strækker sig fra Greiz og er omgivet af tætte skove. Dalen fortsætter fra bydelen Gippe til Steinicht, et landskabsbeskyttelsesområde i Elstertal mod Plauen, til Rentzschmühle og til Elstertalbroen ved den hvide Elster. B 92 fra Plauen til Greiz passerer gennem den lille by. Greiz ligger cirka 6 km og Plauen cirka 13 km væk.
