Liebenburg ligger i den østlige del af den sydlige Salzgitter-højderyg i det nordlige Harz-område mellem Salzgitter-Bad og Schladen-Werla på den 210 m høje Burgberg. Gennem byen løber Stobenbergbach, en biflod til Warne. De nærmeste byer er Goslar, Salzgitter og Wolfenbüttel.
Kommunen Liebenburg grænser mod nord op til byen Salzgitter, mod øst op til kommunen Schladen-Werla, mod syd op til byen Goslar, mod sydvest op til byen Langelsheim og mod vest op til Samtkommune Lutter am Barenberge.
