Liebenburg si trova al limite orientale dell'imboccatura meridionale di Salzgitter-Höhenzug, nel Vorland settentrionale dell'Harz, tra Salzgitter-Bad e Schladen-Werla, sulla collina del Burgberg alta 210 metri. Nel paese scorre il fiume Stobenbergbach, un affluente della Warne. Le città più vicine sono Goslar, Salzgitter e Wolfenbüttel.
Il comune di Liebenburg confina a nord con la città di Salzgitter, a est con il comune di Schladen-Werla, a sud con la città di Goslar, a sud-ovest con la città di Langelsheim e a ovest con la Samtgemeinde di Lutter am Barenberge.
