Kommunen ligger ved den samme navn, men tilhører kommunen Bornhöved, cirka 21 km øst for Neumünster i et landligt og søerigt område. Mod vest går motorvejen A21 fra Bargteheide til Kiel, og den nationale vej 430 fra Neumünster til Plön fører gennem kommuneområdet.
Af de ni pladser i kommunalbestyrelsen har vælgerforeningen BWS siden kommunalvalget i 2018 seks pladser, mens vælgerforeningen Borgere for Schmalensee har tre.
