Kommunen Altenberge ligger ca. 14 km nordvest for universitetbyen Münster i Steinfurt kommune midt i Münsterlandets parklanskab. Kommunen ligger på Altenberger højderyg og er den højest beliggende kommune i det tidligere Burgsteinfurt område. Det højeste punkt er Paschhügel. Det laveste punkt ligger ved sammenløbet af Landwehrbæk med Steinfurter Aa næsten 4 km vest for centrum af byen. Et andet markant punkt er Krüsellinde cirka 800 m sydøst for kirken i Altenberge. Altenberge grænser op til Greven, Münster, Havixbeck, Billerbeck, Laer, Steinfurt samt Nordwalde.
