Som teenager på 17 år mente Felix Wankel (1902-1988) allerede, at det ville være meget mere effektivt at lade en firetaktsmotor køre gennem sine fire faser i stedet for at bevæge sig op og ned. I en alder af 22 år etablerede han sit eget værksted i Heidelberg, hvor han kunne udvikle sin idé, selvom han ikke var en motorbygger. Senere ville han udvikle Wankel-motoren.
