Löbnitz ligger ved Mulde, mellem Leipzigs lavlandsbæk og Dübener Heide. Nabobyer til Löbnitz er Delitzsch, Pouch, Bitterfeld, Bad Düben og Badrina.
I vest for kommunen blev der indtil for få år siden udvundet brunkul i dagbruddet Goitzsche. De nu flødede rester af dagbruddene bliver rekultiveret og omdannet til et rekreationsområde. Således ligger der nu i vest for kommunen en 6,22 kvadratkilometer stor Seelhauser Sø. Flødningen blev accelereret af århundredes oversvømmelse i august 2002, da Muldedeich mellem Löbnitz og Pouch brast og Mulde-højvandet fik dagbruddet Goitzsche til at flyde over.
