Saarbrücken er hovedstaden i delstaten Saarland. Den ligger i den sydlige del af Den Forbundske Republik Tyskland, meget tæt på grænsen til Frankrig og Luxembourg, og byen bliver gennemstrømmet af floden Saar. Netop på grund af denne nærhed til Frankrig og de historiske relationer vedligeholder den i dag tætte forbindelser med den anden side af grænsen: der findes en form for "Eurozone" mellem Forbach og Saarbrücken, og TER-forbindelsen fra Metz til Saarbrücken har fået medfinansiering fra det franske departement Moselle og Saarland-regeringen.
