For nøjagtigt 800 år siden fik Alsfeld stadsretter. På grund af sin centrale beliggenhed ved en handelsvej var Alsfeld fra middelalderen til den tidlige moderne tid et betydeligt handelssted. Den økonomiske betydningsnedgang og stillestånd, der blev forårsaget af ødelæggelserne under trediveårskrigen og omlægningen af handelsruterne, bidrog til en omfattende bevarelse af bybilledet med sine over 400 fredede bygninger og gjorde Alsfeld til et mål for kulturturisme.
