Birkenfeld er en kommune i Rheinland-Pfalz, Tyskland. Dens sæde er byen Birkenfeld. Den afgrænses af kommunerne Sankt Wendel, Trier-Saarburg, Bernkastel-Wittlich, Rhein-Hunsrück, Bad Kreuznach og Kusel.
I begyndelsen af det nittende århundrede var Nahe-floden grænsen mellem to små fyrigheder: Birkenfeld, vest for Nahe; og Lichtenberg, øst for den. Fyrigheden Birkenfeld blev annekteret af Oldenburg i 1817; Lichtenberg blev en eksklave af hertugdømmet Sachsen-Coburg. Preussen købte Lichtenberg i 1834 og gjorde det til kommunen Sankt Wendel.
