Den 10. juni 1868 blev hulen opdaget af to jernbanearbejdere. Det siges, at en hammer er faldet ned i en klippespalte, som viste sig at være adgangen til en drypstenhule, mens de ledte efter dette værktøj eller sprængte et stykke klippe. 400 af de 902 meter af hulen er tilgængelige for besøgende.
