Det drejer sig om en tidligere borg, der første gang nævnes i 1363. Den nuværende anlæg med forborg og et herresæde omringet af vandgrave stammer fra årene 1758 til 1760. Navnet på slottet er afledt af en gammel markbeskrivelse, inghoven = Hellinghoven, gården i Helling.
