Kompetencen omfatter Amtsgerichtsbezirke Bochum, Herne, Herne-Wanne, Recklinghausen og Witten. Det beskæftiger 237 ansatte, herunder 70 dommere.
Indtil 1892 var Landgericht Essen ansvarlig for Bochum. Med preussisk lov af 3. april 1888 blev det bestemt, at Landgericht Bochum skulle oprettes. På grund af bekendtgørelsen af 8. maj 1892 begyndte retten derefter sin aktivitet den 1. oktober 1892.
