De rechtsmacht omvat de arrondissementen Bochum, Herne, Herne-Wanne, Recklinghausen en Witten. Het heeft 237 medewerkers in dienst, waaronder 70 rechters.
Tot 1892 was de rechtbank Essen verantwoordelijk voor Bochum. Met de Pruisische wet van 3 april 1888 werd bepaald dat de rechtbank Bochum opgericht moest worden. Op grond van het besluit van 8 mei 1892 begon de rechtbank op 1 oktober 1892 met haar werkzaamheden.
