Schwerstedt ligger i Thüringer Becken cirka ti kilometer nord for Weimar på en højde af cirka 200 meter. Omgivelserne omkring byen anvendes primært til landbrug. I nord for byen findes Speicher Schwerstedt, et tilbageholdelsesbassin, der forsynes af bækken Lache og tjener til oversvømmelsessikring, vanding og rekreation. Under opstemningen i DDR-tiden gik en del af slotsparken tabt.
For første gang blev Schwerstedt nævnt som Suegerstete i et varekatalog fra Reichsabtei Hersfeld før 802. Dermed er Schwerstedt et af de ældste steder i kredsen. Stednavnet kan føres tilbage til det oldhøjtyske Sweigari.
