Ordet jade er svært at tolke. Forklaringen af jade som gatt, oldfrisisk jet, må afvises, da de ældste beviser allerede viser et d eller th. Det er også blevet antaget, at det drejer sig om et vandnavn med den indoeuropæiske rod u̯ādʰ-. Der er også ældre fortolkninger, hvor jade sættes lig med den i det 11. århundrede nævnte sump "Eddenriad". Dette navn menes at stamme fra ordet Riade eller "Riede" og verbet rieten.
