Den forbinder byens centrum med bydelene Debschwitz og Heinrichsgrün, der ligger vest for floden, og danner samtidig den vestlige udfaldsvej fra byen, da landevejen 2 krydser Elster her. I dens østlige ende danner broen sammen med vejene Am Sommerbad fra nord, Elsterdamm fra syd og Heinrichstraße fra øst en af byens største vejintersektioner.
De nuværende veje Heinrichstraße og Straße des Friedens har altid udgjort byens vestlige udfaldsvej. I middelalderen lå der på stedet for den nuværende Heinrichsbro den første vadested, som allerede i det 16. århundrede blev erstattet af den første bro. Broen er flere gange blevet ødelagt af oversvømmelser eller isjagt.
