Flodnavnet „Dumme“, første gang nævnt i 1343 som de dummen, har germansk oprindelse. Navnet stammer muligvis fra
det gamle nedertyske dumba 'støv' eller dumma 'tæppe af tåge'. Den mest sandsynlige herledning er dog fra det også gamle nedertyske dumb eller althøjtyske tumb 'stum'. Navnet henviser således til den langsomme strømning af vandløbet.
Salzwedeler Dumme løber få kilometer syd for grænsen til nabodelstaten Niedersachsen i Altmark. Den springer nær Neuekrug-Höddelsen og passerer under sin rute for eksempel kommunen Dähre og munder ud i Salzwedel i den sydfra kommende Jeetze.
