Helmstedt er administrationsbyen i Landkreis Helmstedt i Niedersachsen og en selvstændig kommune. Den ligger mellem Elm og Lappwald, cirka 36 km øst for Braunschweig og cirka 45 km vest for Magdeburg ved grænsen til Sachsen-Anhalt.
Under den tyske deling var der her ved motorvejen A2 den vigtigste grænseovergang mellem Forbundsrepublikken Tyskland og Den Tyske Demokratiske Republik samt den vestlige endepunkt for en af transitruterne til Vestberlin. Modparten som grænsebanegård var stationen Helmstedt.
