Inderhavnen i Duisburg, der har en størrelse på 89 ha, var i løbet af højsæsonen for den industrielle revolution i over et århundrede den centrale havn- og handelsplads i Ruhrområdets by. Den blev etableret i årene 1840 til 1844 som Ruhrkanal og forbandt den Rheinkanal, der blev gravet indtil 1832, med Ruhr. Siden midten af 1960'erne mistede havnen betydning og lå brændstof i 20 år, før der skete en strukturel ændring ved Inderhavnen. Det tidligere industriområde, der tilhørte den Internationale Byggeudstilling Emscher Park, som fandt sted fra 1989 til 1999, har gennemgået en grundlæggende forvandling.
