El puerto interior de Duisburgo, que tiene un tamaño de 89 ha, fue durante el auge de la Revolución Industrial durante más de un siglo el puerto y lugar de comercio central de la ciudad del Ruhr. Se creó entre 1840 y 1844 como canal del Ruhr y conectó el canal del Rin, excavado hasta 1832, con el Ruhr. Desde mediados de la década de 1960, el puerto ha perdido importancia y estuvo inactivo durante 20 años, antes de que comenzara una transformación estructural en el puerto interior. La antigua zona industrial, que formó parte de la Exposición Internacional de Construcción Emscher Park, que tuvo lugar de 1989 a 1999, ha cambiado fundamentalmente.
