Der Innenhafen in Duisburg, der eine Größe von 89 ha vorweist, war während der Hochkonjunktur der Industriellen Revolution über ein Jahrhundert lang der zentrale Hafen- und Handelsplatz der Ruhrgebietsstadt. Er entstand in den Jahren 1840 bis 1844 als Ruhrkanal und verband den bis 1832 gegrabenen Rheinkanal mit der Ruhr. Seit Mitte der 1960er Jahre verlor der Hafen an Bedeutung und lag 20 Jahre lang brach, ehe am Innenhafen ein Strukturwandel einsetzte. Das zur Internationalen Bauausstellung Emscher Park , die 1989 bis 1999 stattfand, gehörende ehemalige Industriegebiet hat sich grundlegend gewandelt.
