Wildenburg ligger i den nordrhein-westfäliske del af Eifel i nationalparkkommunen Hellenthal.
Slottet blev bygget mellem 1202 og 1235 og er en af de få Eifel-højborgs, der ikke er blevet ødelagt af krig eller nedrivning. Det var midtpunktet for et herredømme, der strakte sig mod vest til den nuværende belgiske grænse og mod øst til portene til Steinfeld-klosteret. Ligesom i middelalderen kan stedet kun nås ad én vej, den nuværende statsvej 22, som fører fra dalen ved Reifferscheider Bachs over Steinfeld til dalen ved Urft.
